Self-perception is a tricky thing, sometimes the easiest way is to just simulate it, “fake it till you make it”, to try and view yourself through the eyes of others and then to take it from there. The public persona we create merges with what we think about ourselves and becomes one. What we end up with is a static image of ourselves that doesn’t change but is easily recognizable by ourselves (“Oh, that must be me!”) and others. I created a wearable self-portrait that literally looks like a description of my appearance (“She’s a funny girl with pink hair and blue glasses, wearing big earrings”), to conserve this fleeting moment of self-perception in a physical form. I figure, the contrast between the wearer and the wearable will become more drastic with time – or will it? It is interesting to see.

The last image is a different piece, a custom order for a collector from New York City Suzanne Golden that I created upon her request with her likeness. It comes with 2 sets of little earrings that also look like Suzanne – one set for Suzanne herself, and one set for her wearable portrait. The blush on Suzanne’s cheeks is also detachable and can become a set of stud earrings with enamel and Swarovski crystals.
